I am a grandson of the Masters Family, who were popular back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. The group consisted of my grandfather, Johnnie, my grandmother, Lucille, and my father Owen. They lived in Knoxville, TN and their ministry centered around eastern TN and western NC. They were known for their songs, "Gloryland March, Cry From The Cross," "While The Ages Roll On," "When The Wagon Was New," "That Little Old Country Church House," "Medals For Mother," and the list goes on...... They recorded for Columbia Records (produced by Country Music Hall Of Fame member, Don Law), Decca Records, Mercury Records, and Starday Records. Other artists that have recorded my family's songs include Hank Williams, The Lewis Family, Pat Boone, Little Jimmy Dickens, Roy Acuff, Kitty Wells, Hank Snow, Don Gibson, Carl Smith, Ralph Stanley, the Isaacs, Inspirations, Sego Brothers & Naomi, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Chuck Wagon Gang ... just to name a few.
The Masters Family performed many times on the world famous Grand Ole Opry during the early 1950s. This kind of exposure was what helped to make them so popular. They sold alot of records during their career. The Masters Family traveled with country/western package shows. During there time, they traveled with Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs (of Beverly Hillbillies fame!), Archie Campbell (of HEE HAW fame!), and many other popular artist of the time. They were considered to be the Gospel Act, on the show. They were able to reach where other gospel groups could not go. They always played to a packed house. My grandfather, Johnnie loved people, he never met a stranger, he was always ready to stop and talk about the Lord to anyone he met. He found his niche in life by being a great songwriter, singer, and christian man.
I have been singing most all my life, my grandfather, whose name was also Johnnie, taught me how to sing and play guitar when I was 7 years old. I have been involved in music ministry since 1990 serving several churches in the Northeast Mississippi area. My father passed away in 1997 leaving me one-third heir to my grandfather's catalog of songs. The Lord began to show me that I needed to do something with his gospel songs. Through much prayer, and meeting Tim Surrett, Tim encouraged me to come to Asheville, NC and record a tribute project to the Masters Family using some of the old songs from grandaddy's catalog. The Lord truly blessed me with, Jeff Collins and Danny Crawford, the best producers in the Southern Gospel Music field. The response to the project opened the door for me to devote my energy to growing our music ministry, which has taken us to many churches and concert halls across the Southeast.
My desire is to be obedient to the call of Christ to sing for Him, I am ready to minister in song anytime there is an opportunity. I am anxious to meet new friends and share in song about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
